Thanksgiving Preparation

Warm hearth scene

We are starting to prepare a little for the Thanksgiving Holidays.  We close to the public, but our family will be here including somewhere between 15-20 adults and children.  As adult children arrive, we no longer limit the kitchen and people and their belongings are everywhere.  It is no longer a business but our family home and we love it!

Recipe Hunt

I have been searching for my mom’s recipe for dinner rolls. I don’t make them every year, but I thought I could make them this year.  I can’t find the recipe.  I know I can google yeast roll recipes, but I want the one that was handwritten by her.  I have scanned both of my recipe boxes.

During the recipe scanning, I have realized something about recipe boxes. There are memories living in there.  I have “Murphy’s Marinate.”  I have never made it, but when Bill Murphy made it, it tasted superb; enough for me to request the recipe.  Bill died about 25 years ago and it’s just hard to let go of that recipe even if I never have, and probably never will make it.  Then I ran across Carla’s Vegetable pie.  Carla was one of Mom’s good friends. Mom requested that recipe from Carla because she thought I would like it.  I never tasted it.  Mom tasted it and I have never made it, but tangentially I think of Mom when I see that recipe.

The year after I graduated college, I spent one year living in Michigan. Several teachers formed a diner’s club and rotated hosting dinner parties from home to home.  It was made up of 16 teachers, all single women who moved to the rural area. One of the meals that was prepared was like amazingly tasty – Shrimp Continental.  I still have the recipe and have never made it, but I remember it so well and those 16 friends who shared that meal. It’s a great memory!

I still can’t find mom’s roll recipe, but I will keep looking and, in the meantime, I have cleaned out a few clippings and cards.  Am I the only one’s who’s recipe box looks like a clipping and card hodgepodge?

I did throw away this many recipes that I will never make. But it still feels like I am parting with old friends.  And one day, I will probably look for that “Creamy Coleslaw” recipe and wonder where it is.

Happy Thanksgiving planning to all!  Eat well and know that we will just be closed for a few days; then we welcome your reservations again by November 29th!

Postscript

I found it! It just appeared. Mom willed it to be there! Let me know if you want me to share it! (karen@bedfordlanding.com)
